Early Reactions to Pregnancy

Even if you’ve known for awhile that you wanted a baby, it’s absolutely natural for some less positive feelings to creep into the picture: You may feel it’s happening too quickly; you may feel trapped; you may wonder how your body will cope with being pregnant, and feel frightened about the birth; or you may be overwhelmed by the sense of lifelong responsibility for another human being.

Initially, your emotions may be working overtime to process all the changes that are taking place, but over the following weeks, some of this turbulence simmers down. Like many women, you may gain a new respect for your body, and even if early discomfort threatens to undermine this satisfaction, you’ll probably be amazed by the work your body is doing to grow a new life. If this is your first pregnancy, you might be feeling grown up in a new way….. you’re joining the community of mothers.
